You should stick to whatever weapon grants you the most amount of stats. There is no real distinction between what kinds of weapons Mages can use, as all weapons are essentially stat sticks. As Mages do not directly use their weapons to attack enemies, weapons for Mages serve more as a stat stick, naturally providing a high amount of useful stats for Mages such as Spell Power, Stamina, and Intellect. Unlike other classes, Mages are not as dependant on their weapons for dealing damage at any level of content.
